So many packable backpacks have MEAN shoulder straps that collapse and dig in. I was pleasantly surprised at the strap comfort. This isn't the bag for me to do a northern Europe winter trip. If one bagging with this pack it would be to achieve under seat only and a 7-10 days in Hawaii or a long weekend. I would be cutting back on duplicates and just warm weather clothing so 8 pounds/3.6kg is probably all I could realistically fit in the pack for clothing, toiletries and minimalist tech. My REI Trail 25 test pack with my real world packing list for clothing and toiletries came out to 10.5 pounds/4.76kg and this pack is a pound lighter to begin with. My usual day touring load is probably half that: water bottle, phone accessories, a micro 4/3 camera, extra layer and rain jacket, snacks, pen, small journal, sunglasses, sunscreen, maps, etc. And for day touring that means morning until night but with a lot of stops. I've used this pack for day hikes and EDC stuff and I'll hold to that for all day use. There is an open top pocket on the front that would work for the rain jacket and provide quick access. I would load it with just a bit less to give room for an ultralight rain jacket. The bag is full with that load, but there isn't a lot of distortion in the back panel. The side pockets will hold a typical 3" diameter water bottle or the liquids bag during TSA inspection. ![]() ![]() The front and back outside pockets would still be usable for flat items like a map, magazine, or Kindle reader.
